Now that the Turnagain Times has passed into the annals of history, it’s appropriate to look back at its 20-year past after its final issue was published Nov. 2, 2017.

The following excerpt is from the first Turnagain Times, published June 4, 1998 on page 10 and written by Margo Cummings.

Hump Day Hootenanny at The Brown Bear Saloon

Now that Max’s in Girdwood is remodeling, Indian’s Brown Bear Saloon and Motel has become the hip hang out spot in the four valleys. As someone said on the mic, “We’re a Girdwood crew, drinking ‘Bird’wood brew here in Indian. By the way, if you go to the Brown Bear looking for Ike Kelly’s Bird Creek Brewery’s Old 55 on tap, order up a Brown Bear Bitter, it’s one and the same. “It’s just a house label; otherwise it’s the same beer,” explained owner and bartender Matt Williams. “It’s a matter of marketing.”
