The ‘Local’ Look Back…

Spanning January, 1981 to December, 2000, the Local News was a community-created monthly reaching Bird Creek, Indian, Portage and Girdwood bearing news and cheer of note as penned by residents, themselves.

Advocates declared the Local News “the essence of what community education is all about” and the Gazette is proud to keep its tradition alive in its ‘Local’ look back.

Exxon Corporation, a dominant player in global petroleum since the 1940’s, graced pages of The Local News when, in 1983, Volume 3 Issue 10 printed notice of the energy giant acting as benefactor to Green Thumbs of Girdwood.

“Exxon Oil Co. donates 20,000 Holland Tulip bulbs to be distributed among various access areas within [MOA]. Thanks to Michele Kubek, who entered the town’s name, Girdwood was chosen to receive 2,000 bulbs.”

Notice additionally praised valley businesses Alyeska Resort and Hotel, Richmond Contracting and Crow Creek Gold Mine for donation of funding, topsoil delivery and landscaping implements to the thirty member volunteer planting force.


“Come spring we will know if the ’83 TULIP PLANT was a success,” copy read. “Thanks to all for making our beautiful community grow.”
