The ‘Local’ Look Back

The ‘Local’ Look Back

Spanning January, 1981 to December, 2000, the Local News was a community-created monthly reaching Bird Creek, Indian, Portage and Girdwood bearing news and cheer of note as penned by residents, themselves.

Advocates declared the Local News “the essence of what community education is all about” and the Gazette is proud to keep its tradition alive in its ‘Local’ look back.

Girdwood and Turnagain Arm Area Plans rear once more to the forefront of community focus when, in 1994, Volume 14 Number 4 of The Local News pressed advisories regarding potential development of a major ski area, encouraging discussion and community response to proposed changes which would ever-shape the valley and surrounds.

“The plans set out land management policies that allow a moderate level of ski resort development to occur in the Glacier/Winner Creek area. The proposed policies would minimize the impacts of any future resort development on the community of Girdwood and its natural environment.”

Municipality and DNR offices, as well as localized and headquartered library locations, carried copies of both plans, instructing response be submitted either in writing or orally at up-coming meet dates.
