This article that I found made me think about how beautiful, but dangerous it can be here in this great state during the winter months. Whether it is avalanches, cracking ice or rolling glaciers, safety is of the utmost importance. Take precautions to be safe out there this winter and enjoy this winter wonderland. I found this article in The Local News created by Four Valleys Community School, April 1983, Volume 3, Number 4, uncredited.

Portage Lake Ice Unsafe
The Anchorage Ranger District of the Chugach National Forest is warning the public that the ice on Portage Lake is unsafe. A large iceberg in the lake ice has tilted 15 degrees in the last week and is in danger of rolling. When the iceberg rolls, it will fracture the lake ice for hundreds of yards around it. The Forest Service is asking that visitors to Portage Valley heed the posted signs and not venture onto the ice of Portage Lake at any time.
