Get Ready for This: Four Valleys Community School
Special to the Glacier City Gazette
ANO, Adults’ Night Out! returns to Girdwood Saturday, October 15. Tickets are available in the FV office, online, or from your local board member. Get two for $40 today, mark your calendar, and enjoy an evening free of kiddos and full of friends, hors d’oeuvres and fresh beer from Midnight Sun Brewing.
Cross Country wraps up this week for both age 4-5 and grades 1-6, and 15 and 54 kids signed up respectively, representing a healthy population from the Girdwood School, excluding Jr. High. Thank you to Coach Melanie Stiassny for organizing the Kinder XC and Gabrielle Hoessle for heading the large group of XC kids with several volunteer coaches, leading and chasing energetic kids on the trails around the Girdwood School, rain or shine. Young runners had fun enjoying the varying puddles and roots, games, and active sport; finishing practice muddy and smiling. The Cross Country Jamboree in Anchorage September 17 drew over 20 participants from Girdwood, and the kids had a great showing, placing well, and donned vintage orange jerseys from the Girdwood Grizzlies of the early 80s. Go Grizzlies!
Adult Soccer and Basketball are currently scoring points in the Girdwood gym Monday and Wednesday evenings, respectively. Join the fitness routine and warm up or cool down with a running track drop-in or punch card, offered now in 10, 25, and 50 punch increments. Really need that run and the weather, daylight, or construction is not quite cooperating with your schedule? The clean indoor track is ready for you to stay fit.
While we’re talking about indoor activities, it’s time to mention the kids current and future offerings. Kung Fu is in session, with beginner, intermediate, and intermediate-advanced classes for ages 3-5 (Pre K) to 10+. Sigh of relief: Romp-n-Snore Mondays are back at 10:45 a.m.-noon Oct 3 in the Girdwood School! Bring kids under age 6 to run and play and of course sleep following all that rambunctious fun.
Pre-K Music and Move begins Oct. 10 in the Girdwood Community Room at 11:30 a.m. Singing will be great here (and hearing later) with Melanee. FV Indoor Soccer is forming teams right now for Kindergarten and grades 1-6, with the first practice Oct 3. If you haven’t registered, sign up to secure space and give youth the opportunity to maintain fitness and keep playing while the seasons change outside. Friday Night Gym Games for grades 6-8 and 9-12 began last Friday night. The numbers don’t lie: This is the place to be and be active.
Several pottery, painting, and art classes will be offered beginning in October, and not just for kids. Over the next two months, one could be making a plate, mug, a snowflake, bowl, or even salmon tiles! These creations are the subject of different classes in which to participate. Chess Club also begins Oct. 5 and Climbing Camp at the Rock Gym in November.
Lastly, some side notes and fun, do-not-miss community events. Thrill the World, Learn the Thriller begins Oct. 3! Sign up and get set for Halloween. Learn the infamous Thriller choreographed dance. The photos of dancing zombies from 2015 may still haunt the viewer. Calling All Pets visits Girdwood Tuesday Oct. 11 from 4-9 p.m. at the Girdwood School.
Finally, don’t miss this special assembly, held Monday Oct 3 for the FV community and school. Artist and rock musician Arthur Lee Land performs at 1:30 p.m. and is known for his role in AbleChild.org. As a 5th grader taking Ritalin and so called “hyperactive,” he wishes he had the support back then and wouldn’t have to wait 30 years to embrace his truly dynamic gift. Watch his official music video and autobiographical song Good Enough; learn more at ablechild.org. Thank you to Girdwood PTA and FVCS for providing our community this fantastic opportunity.
So, were you ready? Visit fourvalleys.org to register and read anything not mentioned. See you at ANO!
