The ‘Local’ Look Back
Spanning January, 1981 to December, 2000, the Local News was a community-created monthly reaching Bird Creek, Indian, Portage and Girdwood bearing news and cheer of note as penned by residents, themselves.
Advocates declared the Local News “the essence of what community education is all about” and the Gazette is proud to keep its tradition alive in its ‘Local’ look back.
From December 1993, Volume 13, Number 9 of the Local News
Valley veterans and visitors alike welcomed their own alpine culture crown jewel when, in 1993, Alyeska Resort unveiled its tramway and mountain restaurant. Today, the Tramway is an indispensible, year-round mountain fixture, a status stemming from its auspicious inauguration covered in Local News.
Then reporter, Monica Ostrom wrote of the event, “…I must confess, this is the first time I have ascended 2,300 feet in an aerial tram dutifully attended by a gloved, tuxedo-clad attendant!”
