The ‘Local’ Look Back

The ‘Local’ Look Back

Spanning January, 1981 to December, 2000, the Local News was a community-created monthly reaching Bird Creek, Indian, Portage and Girdwood bearing news and cheer of note as written by residents.

Advocates declared the Local News “the essence of what community education is all about” and the Gazette is proud to keep its tradition alive in its Local Look Back.

With fresh white snow finally fallen, we return to the Local News Issue 11, Volume 5, 1984 when John Baker presented Glacier Creek Ski Academy plans.

The private boarding school intended for Alpine and Nordic skiers of promise was to operate annually November thru May, housing approximately ten students and faculty in a 4,000 square-foot, five-bedroom house on Crow Creek Road.

The academy would go on claim such alumni as Olympic gold and silver medalist skier Tommy Moe.
