Alyeska at a Glance
By Stephanie Drescher
Early in the morning in Girdwood, if you stand really still, you will feel something a little different in the air – the warmth of spring. As the earth warms, the mountains and Alyeska Resort are getting ready for some hot engines to hit the slopes; the Alaska Motor Mushers Club will be presenting the Motor Madness Expo April 27-29.
Motor Mushers is dedicated to all things snow machine and to entering them into every kind of race possible, including hill climbs, drag races and junior events. If you love snow machines, then you do not want to miss this weekend. Check Alyeska Resort online calendar for more details.
Another annual event that you definitively do not want to miss is the celebration of Mother’s Day. Abraham Lincoln once said, “all that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” Many of us share this sentiment towards our mothers or mother figures. Alyeska Resort is doing its part to make sure the mothers in our midst feel special.
The Tram will be opening up for Mother’s Day. Your mother will be able to enjoy the breathtaking views from the top of Mt. Alyeska. And because no mother should have to cook on her special day, a Mother’s Day Brunch will be served at the Hotel Alyeska starting at 10 a.m. with a total of five seatings being offered.
Featured dishes will include Citrus-Poached Shrimp & King Crab, Ricotta & Chocolate Chip Crepes with Chocolate Sauce and Leg of Lamb with Mint Chimichurri, plus brunch favorites like made-to-order omelets and waffles. Reservations are required, so please check the website for more details.
The Local Spring Special is also currently in effect at the Hotel Alyeska. The local rate is starting at $109 for midweek stays and this special will run from April 23–May 16. Even though the tram will not be running and several of our award-winning restaurants will be closed, there are still many reasons to visit the resort and enjoy the surrounding areas.
The saltwater pool, that gleams in the natural light beneath a vaulted, wood beam ceiling, and the 16-person whirlpool with a mountain view, is one perfect excuse to visit.
There is also an ample gym and a traditional sauna at the hotel to enjoy. The lower valley is hiking well, and many nature lovers are hitting the Bird to Gird Pathway parallel to Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm to throw off their spring fever. The 13-mile paved path between shore and the snow covered mountains is perfect for jogging, biking, dog walking and wildlife viewing.
Spring is in the air, and Alyeska Resort is transitioning but not slowing down. Stand still and enjoy the warmth in the breeze, then check the resort’s calendar and start filling yours up with rejuvenating, renewing and rad things to do.
