S. Anchorage Bucs Win Championship with Girdwood Boys
Special to the Glacier City Gazette
The South Anchorage Buccaneers (Cadet Division) football team won the championship with a decisive 44-0 win over the Mat-Su Steelers at the Anchorage Football Stadium on Oct.15th. Girdwood’s Bryan Epley is an Assistant Coach.
In three contests between the teams, the Bucs posted three wins against the Steelers. Four Girdwood boys (Cache Bridges (#18), Zach Connell (#54), Noah Epley (#8), and Bearyn Luey (#88)) played for the Bucs, who went 7-3 on the season in the seven-team league.
Bridges proved to be a versatile player on offense and a tackling leader on defense. Connell, a first year player, helped shore up the defensive line while learning the game. Epley ran a pass heavy, spread type offense and finished the season with 16 touchdowns in the air, two on the ground, and just five interceptions in seven starts. Luey provided size and strength at guard on offense and defensive end.
Bridges, Connell and Epley were all recognized as scholars by the Pop Warner football organization due to their exceptional Grade Point Averages. All four boys end their youth football careers, leave Girdwood School next spring and head to high school next fall.
