AARP Driver Course, Art Aplenty, Plus a Dose of Yoga
Four Valleys Community School
FVCS is back in session in 2018, where one can find classes for locals of all ages nearly every single day. Our classes are held in the Girdwood Community Room, Girdwood K-8 School, and Meadows Community Center. We are here because of your donations and contributions. Thank you for supporting us by taking our classes and attending our events.
First on the calendar is a driver improvement course developed by AARP, offered Mar. 3. This day-long course is geared toward seniors, though open to adults. Benefits include a discount on auto insurance cost and two credit points with DMV. Sign up early to ensure space.
A new evening option for adults has been added to the Mon.-Fri. night options at the Girdwood School Gym. From Thur. 7-9 p.m., lace up your shoes and grab your racket! Tennis will take over the court, round robin style, with priority given to those registered.
Art classes are filling up our session so read on and sign up. Glass fused mosaic art for beginners to experienced has a two-class workshop with local artist Laura Walter. Next week, learn from an expert to design a plate, bowl or colorful wall hanging product from glass. Create your piece to use or gift for an upcoming birthday. Jan. 29 and 31, join from 6-9 p.m. in the art room at the Girdwood School.
Girdwood multimedia artist Barbara Lydon has a colorful line up for kids. Mardi Gras is coming up and maybe you recall how those fun masks don’t fit everyone’s eyes, nose, or ears, leaving wearers appearing crooked. Now imagine being a kid and trying to fit one. With Lydon, you can create your own mask that fits just right.
In this two-session class, artists will create customized plaster masks right on their own faces and create one-of-a-kind wearable art. Masks will be decorated and ready to wear on Mardi Gras. Class is Feb. 6 and 13 after school for grades 1-5.
Something Fishy is Going On. Explore clay hand-building techniques for grades 1-5 in a three-session class Feb 7, 12, and 28. Kids will learn a variety of ceramic approaches to develop three marine themed sculptures. Young artists will manipulate clay using slabs, pinch pots and coils. Lydon specializes in ceramics and enjoys creating sculptural and functional art using bright colors on handcrafted pieces.
Join Briana for this six class spring session of yoga for preschool aged kids. This fun, engaging and healthy activity will help balance your child’s day. Kids learn basic yoga poses and improve coordination and confidence in a safe, comfortable environment. Jan. 24 is the first class at 10 a.m. in the Community Room. Yoga for K-2 is now open and will begin Feb. 6 at the Girdwood School. Does your kindergarten, first, or second grader need something healthy and fun to do right after school? Class addresses motor skills, strength, and openness through basic yoga and games. No experience necessary.
