The ‘Local’ Look Back…
Spanning January, 1981 to December, 2000, the Local News was a FVCS-created monthly reaching Bird Creek, Indian, Portage and Girdwood bearing news of note as penned by residents, themselves.
Advocates declared the Local News “the essence of what community education is all about” and the Gazette is proud to keep its tradition alive in its ‘Local’ look back.
Then, as now, developable land along Turnagain Arm and management of the same was a point of special community emphasis at Girdwood.
The topic resonated in 1993 when in Volume 13, Number 3 The Local News advised of Turnagain Arm Management Plan updates.
“Vast majority of land in Girdwood area outside Chugach State Park and National Forest lands is under State and Municipal ownership. Nearly all is undeveloped (10,000 acres). This contrasts sharply with remaining 379 acres of privately owned, undeveloped land.
Current patterning reflects Girdwood as a recreation resort community with relatively small population…There is very small amount of local-serving land use and nearly non-existent industrial land base, exception being active mining at Crow Creek.”
Pending a then Resort feasibility and impact analysis, and given a recognized acceleration in regional growth and development arcs, the update went on to ask of Local News readers: where does the community wish to go? And how does it wish to get there?
